Suresh Thawani, Chief Coach & Mentor, ‘Full Circle’ is a Metallurgist by profession and is a certified Executive Coach. He graduated from IIT, Kharagpur in 1972 and has done CEO Coach Accreditation program with CFI (Coaching Foundation of India), Chennai in 2011.
Suresh has 47 years of work experience of which he spent 41 years in Tata Group. His last 12 years in Tata Group were as CEO and Managing Director of three different companies. He spent the first 29 years of his professional career in Tata Steel, both in technical and commercial fields. He was Director of Procurement Division,
Director of Scientific Services Division and Chief Sales Manager, among others. He was regarded as a person who exceeded expectations in delivery of results. He was considered an efficient trouble shooter and on several occasions was given assignments that were critical due to prevailing difficult conditions and needed exceptional skills to succeed.
Suresh has Board Room experience as CEO & Managing Director of Tata Sponge Iron Limited, CEO & Managing Director of JAMIPOL Limited (A Tata Group Enterprise), CEO of Neelachal Refractories Limited (A Tata Group Enterprise) and Executive Director of Standard Chrome Limited (A JV of Tata Steel). He was nominee Director on the Board of Industrial Development Corporation of Odhisha and Director on the Board of TPM club of India
As CEO of three different Tata Group companies, he played a crucial role in expanding and changing those organizations. As a leader at the helm of affairs, he was loved by stakeholders, especially the employees, for his caring nature and being truthful & upright. He always has been a change agent and exhibited firmness with affection towards employees and stakeholders. He led organizations to adopt automation; right sized the payroll with care &least amount of turbulence. He made critical interventions for lasting effects, in fields such as employee engagement, skill development, learning and growth, TPM, TQM, among others. These interventions have led to the organizations yielding outstanding results in hard aspects like productivity & profits and soft aspects like employee engagement, stakeholder satisfaction among others. Many of the interventions in Tata Sponge like Laksh and Aadhar have earned kudos from Tata Group as best practices towards employee engagement.
As a coach, Suresh has coached several CXOs to their great satisfaction. The coaching has benefitted both the recipients and their organizations. In the first ever book about to be released on coaching cases by CFI, one of his coaching cases has been published.
Suresh is presently associated with USA based consulting organisation, Alvarez and Marsal as their Steel Expert in India. He is also Sr. Advisor with IMR resources, London. Suresh is also associated with Institute of Directors as an expert in their Board Advisory and Research Council. As a lead member of this council, he has been doing Independent & External Assessment of Boards for Corporate Governance. Not many Boards are courageous to engage external team for assessment.
Suresh has also held several positions of informal leadership. He was Chairman of Odhisha Chapter of Confederation of Indian Industry. He was member of National Think Tanks committees of CII such as Human Resources and Policy Making committees. He was Vice- Chairman of Sponge Iron Manufacturers Association and as a very active member, helped Prime Minister’s National Mission of Energy Efficiency to introduce carbon reduction program in Sponge Iron Industry. He was Chairman of MTD 30 committee of Bureau of Indian Standards. He was an active member of National Committee of Indian Institute of Metals besides being Chairman of Kolkata Chapter. He is life member of Indian Institute of Metals and Institute of Quality & Reliability.
